A few lingcod and red snapper (yelloweye rockfish) make for a colorful photo and excellent tablefare. They are both plentiful throughout the season. Lings are a ferocious creature and look like something out of a science fiction movie. They eat anything they can get their oversized mouths around and often grab other fish you are reeling in. I have had them attack salmon, halibut, rockfish, and other lingcod. A fish this aggressive makes for great sport.
We fish for Lingcod and rockfish with our heavy tackle and jigs. These fish both inhabit rocky structures. The lings like the pinnacles and the rockfish the edges. We have landed lings to 61 lbs. with 35 lb. fish or larger being relativley common. The rockfish will reach weights exceeding 20 lbs. with 10-12 being average.
You will want to come physically prepared for bottom fish. Water depths may exceed 300' while heavy jigs and big fish test your stamina. For those willing to accept the challenge the reward is well worth it.
